Computing giant Intel commissioned Absolute to produce an infographic to communicate how embedded internet and connected technologies have grown since their inception back in the 60's.
Our team were given a vast amount of data spanning from 1960 up to projections for 2040. This data concerning uptake of different technologies, numbers of inter-connected devices, statistics about the growth of personal computers, key milestones in the development of internet devices and (phew) information about how the Intel brand helped shape the growth of the internet.
Absolute were tasked in organising and interpreting this information along a timeline to tell the story of how people have become interconnected, and also convey the vast “explosions” of growth involved when certain technologies came to market.
The resulting artwork is a complex matrix of line work consisting of several interlocking "trees" - the density, thickness, and spread of the branches corresponding to the number of connected devices along the vertical timeline. The trees are colour coded for each “branch” of technology, be it connected video game consoles, smart TV’s, personal computers or smartphones. We also put in some nice, bespoke illustrations of certain key devices that appear at certain milestones, such as the Amazon Kindle, iPad and the (considerably less sexy) Osborne One – the first laptop to come to market.
The finished piece will be used by Intel in a worldwide cross media campaign in high profile print locations as well as on Intel.com
